summaryHow we perceive and act in the world depends not only on information in the environment, but also on our own body capabilities. This talk will focus on how visual representations of bodies (one’s own as well as other’s) can influence perceived affordances—the decisions that we make about action possibilities. I will show that real, illusory, and virtual changes to the body affect action decisions. Furthermore, I will present recent results that support a social context for perceived affordances, showing that the size of another person’s body influences perceived affordances for oneself. Together, this work suggests that perceptual, cognitive, and social influences on bodily awareness underlie perceived affordances.
