summaryCase reports and clinical studies reported reduced or absence of pain reactivity in autism or schizophrenia. We conducted an experimental study using a neurophysiologic measure of pain reactivity (the nociceptive RIII reflex) in order to examine the empirical basis for the reported pain insensitivity of autism and schizophrenia. The RIII threshold and the neurovegetative responses were measured in individuals with autism (N=20), schizophrenia (N=10) and typical development (N=20) matched on age, sex and puberty stage. The results will be presented and discussed.
