| summary | Modulated meanings and lexical pragmatics have been at the center of recent inquiry. I will show how, using my framework of equilibrium linguistics, it is possible to derive such meanings from first principles. In so doing, I will argue that what semantics and pragmatics have in common - the ubiquity of context - outweighs their differences and so the two should be unified into a single field. |
