| summary | Zermelo’s and Cantor’s conception of the mathematical (set theoretic) universe as a whole are compared. I conclude that Cantor’s conception of the mathematical universe as an actual, completed whole is more coherent, natural, and powerful than is commonly appreciated. In particular, I argue that from a Cantorian view of the mathematical universe powerful set class theoretic reflection principles can be motivated, where from Zermelo’s viewpoint such an enterprise would seem problematic. |
