summaryThe Swedia dialect database is a database of recorded dialect samples from 107 locations in Sweden and Swedish speaking parts of Finland. Twelve speakers were recorded in each location – six speakers of an older generation (3 male, 3 female, average age 65 years) and six speakers of a younger generation (3 male, 3 female, average age 25 years). The bulk of recordings were made in the summer of 1999. The collection of data was part of a six year project (1998-2003) shared between the departments of linguistics at Umeå, Stockholm and Lund universities with the full title “SweDia 2000 – Phonetics and phonology of the Swedish dialects around the year 2000”. In my talk I will describe planning, logistics and technical solutions involved in collecting the data. I will also describe the linguistic considerations involved in deciding the desired types of data. I will then proceed to a description of what we may call Phase 2 of the work on the Swedia database. In this phase we will develop the database infrastructure further to make it more user friendly. Particular attention in this phase will be given to format standards, meta tag standards, searchablility of the database, user contracts etc. This project as well as the full database is presently hosted at the University of Gothenburg. Finally I will say a few words about cooperation with other database providers, exchange of data etc. and give examples of how this kind of cooperation can be turned into a win-win situation for all parties involved.
