summaryDuring many years, the cognitive study of handwriting has been rather limited, especially in comparison to the research conducted in other domains of language processing, such as language comprehension or speech production. However, the growth of new techno logies allowing to register and measure the online handwriting production process has led to the consolidation of the discipline, with new paradigms and theoretical models steadily increasing. One of the topics that more debate have stimulated is the invol vement of phonological representations during word handwriting production. In this talk, I will present a series of experiments evidencing the use of phonological sublexical units when writing known words, as well as results that suggest that multiple phon ological sublexical units may impact both written latencies and writing durations. I will also comment how some of these effects might vary in cases in which the spelling/writing process might be impaired, such in dyslexia, Alzheimer disease or Mild Cognit ive Impairment. Finally, a proposal to integrate the observed effects in a theoretical framework of the writing process is sketched.
