summaryThis presentation will review the rapidly accumulating evidence from both laboratory and epidemiologic studies to indicate that chronic partial sleep loss and decreased sleep quality may increase the risk of obesity and diabetes. Emerging evidence for an adverse impact of circadian disturbances, independently of sleep loss, on diabetes risk will be presented. The impact of sleep disturbances, including obstructive sleep apnea and insomnia, on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes will also be discussed.
