| summary | One of the greatest difficulties when listening to a foreign language is to properly perceive their phonemes. Furthermore, there are great individual differences in the capacity to perceive non-native phonemes. Factors such as age of acquisition and amount of exposure have been proposed as major determinants in individuals’ performance. In independent studies we have observed a relationship between speech perception capacities in the native language and the capacity to perceive foreign phonemes. These results have been obtained both with bilinguals differing in age of acquisition and proficiency. The results of these studies point in the direction of an important role of speech perception and attentional mechanisms in accounting for non-native phoneme perception capacities.
Biographie
Núria Sebastán-Gallés received her PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Barcelona in 1986. After Post-doctoral training at the Max Plank Institute and the LSCP-CNRS in Paris, she was appointed as Full Professor at the Faculty of Psychology (University of Barcelona) in 2002. In 2009 she moved to the Universitat Pompeu Fabra. She received international recognition as shown by a James S. McDonnell Foundation Award ('Bridging Mind, Brain and Behavior' Program) in 2001 and giving the Nijmegen Lectures in 2005. In 2009 she was awarded the ICREA Academia Prize established by the Catalan Government. She was member of the advisory group of the 'Brain and Learning' initiative of the OECD from 2002 to 2006.
She leads the SAP Research Group (Speech Acquisition and Processing) at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and she?s the coordinator of a Consolider-Ingenio 2010 research consortium investigating Bilingualism and Cognitive Neuroscience (BRAINGLOT). She has authored over 70 publications in international journals including 'Science', 'PNAS', 'Cognition', 'Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience', among others. |
