summaryIn my talk I want to address a number of conceptual, methodological and epistemological issues which arise when professional practitioners become more closely involved in analyses of their own professional practices. In recent years, it has been advocated that the relevance of discourse analysis for our understanding of professional and institutional practices can be enhanced considerably, if we succeed in involving professionals more closely in the research process. One way to do so is by aligning the goals and concepts of empirical discourse analysis with specific professional understandings of their own communicative practices and the debates that run through professional worlds. My presentation will report on a joint research venture with a group of home visiting professionals in the Northern part of London* (postnatal health workers, educational workers, social workers, etc.) who have been invited to analyze and comment on recordings of their home visits. I will focus on professional tasks through the lens of specific interactional sequences - e.g. "how and when to stage an advice", "managing interruptions", "displaying alignment", "referring a client", etc. * The research reported in this paper has been done in close collaboration with Dr. Christopher Hall (School of Medicine and Health, University of Durham).
