summary | Throughout my career I have been involved in empirical science, clinical medicine and from that to studies of first person accounts of chronic neurological conditions; sensory loss, facial paralysis, spinal cord injury, chronic pain and cerebral palsy. I view the two approaches to understanding, empirical and narrative/biographical, as providing complementary and occasionally synergistic insights. In the lecture I will explore examples of this. Merleau-Ponty wrote in one of his last works, that ‘science manipulates things and gives up living in them.’ I want to explore both. |
