summaryResearchers studying interpersonal coordination in social interactions have known for decades that such interactions are characterized by the synchronization of interacting individuals’ movements. Using a variety of laboratory tasks, my past research has determined that the interactions of rhythmically moving people can be understood as interpersonal dynamic synergies in that the coordination patterns observed conform to those predicted by dynamical models of synchronization that characterize synchronization found in systems at other scales of nature. More recently, my research has begun to explore the synchronization in more naturalistic verbal interactions such as joke telling, playing Pictionary and having a conversation. Because such interactions do not have stereotyped rhythmic movements of specific effectors, methods that allow one to evaluate time series of whole body activity need to be employed. Also because the motor synchronization observed evolves over time, analytic methods that allow one to observe the time unfolding of synchronization processes are important to use. The focus of my talk will be to review recent research on the interpersonal coordination in these more naturalistic tasks as well as describe the methods I have been using to evaluate their social motor dynamics.
