detailsSéance en hommage à Herbert Breger.
summaryIn philosophy, physics and mathematics, the 17th century was keen of methods. In particular in mathematics, methods for solving problems were the main aim. Proving theorems was less important than today. One of the favourite methods was the method of analysis. There were very different meanings of analysis which continued in a sense until the 20th century. For Viète calculation with letters was analysis. The present meaning (analysis concerns limit processes) developed from Leibniz's introduction of infinitesimal analysis at the end of the 17th century.
