| summary | The first part of the talk will look at the relevance of recent work on the evolution of communication to questions about the nature of content and representation. (Brian Skyrms' 2010 book Signals is the best example of the new work I have in mind.) The second part of the talk will apply these ideas to a particular case: memory. Both internal and external memory can be fit into a sender-receiver model. Does this help us gain a theoretical understanding of memory? How does this treatment of memory relate to philosophical questions about belief? |
