summaryThe majority of phylogenetic studies in historical linguistics have used lexical data. However, languages can offer a variety of types of data suitable for phylogenetic analyses, including morphosyntactic data. In this talk, we will show how the framework of construction grammar can be used to code morphosyntactic characters for phylogenetic analyses, using the negation domain of the Tupí-Guaraní languages spoken in South America as a case study. Our dataset includes 29 languages and 11 distinct negation "functions" and we have adapted the Reflex platform to store our data and construct cognate sets. We will also discuss the evolution of specific morphemes and constructions of Tupí-Guaraní negation using ancestral state reconstructions.
