| summary | Neural systems have to deal with spatial and temporal imprecision, which is due in large part to sensory and motor signal variability. Some insights on how this 'noise' is tamed by the human CNS have come from studies of behavioral variability in perception and action, that have suggested that the brain optimally limits the impact of noise. I will review recent studies from my lab on eye saccades and arm pointing movements in healthy subjects and Parkinson's Disease patients. Results give further credit to the concept of optimal estimation and control, while indicating some of its limits for our understanding of action planning and control. |
