summaryEpilepsy is often associated with cognitive and behavioral impairments that can have profound impact on the quality of life of patients. Although the mechanisms of cognitive impairment are not completely understood, data from my laboratory suggest that seizures and interictal abnormalities are only partially responsible for cognitive deficit in epilepsy. We propose that alteration of GABAergic inhibition, often responsible for seizures, also induces abnormalities in neuronal coordination, ultimately resulting in functional deficits.
