| summary | Inattention is pervasive. It affects you and me several times a day. More notably, it impacts severely on a range of neurological and psychiatric disorders, from focal lesions to neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental conditions. In such disorders, inattention is also often associated with altered behaviour: either impulsive decision-making or, paradoxically, apathy. Both extremes can lead to devastating consequences for individuals.
Can neuroscience offer insights into understanding or even treating such deficits?
In this seminar I’ll discuss studies on attention, working memory and decision-making in healthy people and neurological patients. I’ll attempt to show how findings from such investigations, in concert with imaging data, allow us to build hypotheses regarding the contribution of brain regions to attention, working memory and behavioural control. Finally, I hope to demonstrate how it might be possible to modulate inattention, impulsivity and apathy with neuromodulators. |
