This talk discusses the findings from a series of randomised controlled trials on the wording of letters sent to over 200,000 UK individuals who did not pay their tax on time. The findings demonstrate how messages based on concepts such as social norms, the omission bias, and cognitive dissonance, can affect revealed behaviour in the real world. The talk will also reflect on the ways in which academic research can be integrated into the policy-making process.
