summaryIn this talk, I would like to introduce my past and ongoing research   on how people use prosodic cues to resolve contrastive relations   among referents and how children acquire an ability to make use of   prosody for discourse comprehension. While many early production   studies had claimed that toddlers and preschoolers are able to   produce adult-like prosodic patterns that express newness/givenness   and contrast, more recent production studies suggest that young   children’s prosody is not quite adult-like and the acquisition of   complex tunes that express various pragmatic meaning are learned   rather gradually. The results of our recent cross-linguistic eye- tracking studies also indicate gradual improvement in the use of   prosodic prominence for online referential resolution. I will discuss   the processing mechanism of the contrast-marking prosody and how it   may be related to general cognitive ability, which may explain a   rather long developmental trajectory.
