summaryThis talk presents a new framework: “Postcolonial Lexicography” – a recent off-shot of the Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM) research program, which incorporates insights from linguistic ethnography and postcolonial language studies. Postcolonial Lexicography studies the words and meaning of creoles, Englishes, urban ethnolects, and other postcolonial language varieties. The talk explores the lexicon of Urban Bislama (bichelamar) as spoken in Port Vila, Vanuatu. Based on extensive fieldwork, explications of words in three domains will be presented: emotion words, speech act verbs, and sociality constructs. The talk discusses central questions for contemporary lexicography: the metalinguistic adequacy of all languages, the concept of semantic cryptodiversity, and the reinventions of European words in the globalizing world.
