summaryIn this presentation we will provide an overview of our past and present research activity conducted in the field of Virtual Reality. We will describe our latest techniques dedicated to real-time interaction with 3D virtual environments. We will focus on two kinds of advanced interaction in virtual reality : haptic interaction (body-based interaction with tactile and force feedback, stimulating the skin and the body) and brain-computer interface (brain-based interaction and 3D control via the brain activity-only using electroencephalography signals). We will notably detail our approach for "Pseudo-Haptic Feedback" which provides haptic sensations or "haptic illusions" by exploiting visual feedback. We will also evoke our results obtained within the OpenViBE1 and OpenViBE2 ANR projects in the field of Brain-Computer Interfaces for interacting "by thought" with virtual environments such as for videogames. Post-scriptum : Anatole Lécuyer is senior researcher, at Inria, Rennes, France, the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control. He has been conducting research since more than 12 years in the field of virtual reality : 3D User Interfaces, haptic feedback, 3D visual displays, and brain-computer interfaces (BCI). He has been involved as Coordinator or Principal Investigator in various National or International projects such as : ANR projects “OpenViBE1” (05-09) and “OpenViBE2” (09-12) on Brain-Computer Interfaces and Virtual reality ; European Strep project “NIW” (08-11) on Augmented Walking, and European Network of Excellence “INTUITION” (05-08) on Virtual Reality. He serves as or expert in Virtual Reality and BCI for public bodies such as European Commission (EC) or French National Research Agency (ANR). He is involved in Program Committees of main conferences of his field (IEEE VR, IEEE 3DUI, ACM VRST, etc). He is an associate editor of the ACM Transactions on Applied Perception (ACM TAP), and International Journal of Human-Computer Studies (IJHCS). He is former secretary of the French Association for Virtual Reality and IEEE Technical Committee on Haptics.
