summaryMy overall question is how acting directly with one's body relates to our feeling it 'from the inside'. I approach this question by weaving an argument based on considerations from action theory, the phenomenology of embodied agency, and from work on the psychology and neuroscience of action. In this paper, I will explore a positive account of the role of bodily awareness in acting with one's body by exploiting the role of bodily awareness in constraining a sense of what actions one's body can afford. I motivate this with a two stage argument. The first stage involves arguing that a sense of bodily affordances is a condition on intentionally acting with one's body. The second stage involves arguing that we can understand the distinctive role of bodily awareness in providing a sense of bodily affordances only through exploring the role of bodily awareness in motor imagery, and the connection of that to motor planning and the content of motor intentions.
