| summary | Since I started my PhD in 2001, a dismal claim has always been floating in the air: “coding is dead”. Nonetheless, in the recent years we have witnessed the advent of spatially-coupled codes and polar codes, two major breakthroughs that have pushed the limits of coding even further. Despite these achievements, or perhaps because of them, the same claim persists: “coding is dead”. So, is coding eventually dead? In this lecture, I will claim that coding is far from being dead but, on the contrary, is more alive than ever. I will show that coding has a fundamental role to play in key applications and research fields such as uncoordinated multiple access, distributed storage and caching, and distributed computing, and I will discuss some of our recent work and ideas in these areas. By the end of this lecture, you will hopefully agree with me that coding theory is an essential, very exciting area to research in. |
