summary | Pigment patterns are a classic and enduring system for understanding developmental mechanisms of morphogenesis and pattern formation. We are using the horizontal stripes of zebrafish and the many and varied patterns of zebrafish relatives to understand how pigment patterns develop and evolve. Here I will present recent findings that reveal a peripheral nerve origin for adult pigment cells, mechanisms underlying the migration of these cells to the skin, newly discovered interactions amongst pigment cell classes, and observations on how these interactions have evolved to generate pattern differences among species. |
