| summary | In the recent literature on indexicals it is widely agreed that various examples of recorded messages call for revision of the semantic theory originally offered by Kaplan. Insofar as the possibility of accommodating these examples in terms of a pragmatic account has been considered at all, it has been dismissed rather quickly. Too quickly. in my opinion. I argue that things are far more complicated than suggested by the arguments offered against the pragmatic approach. Once we take these complications into account, we see that there is scope for handling the putative counterexamples and resisting the arguments. |
