summary“Suppose that you are a rational agent in the standard sense that you do what you believe would fulfil your intrinsic desires as far as possible. Does that fact limit the extent to which you can act for the sake of others? The talk will be concerned with various arguments, old and new, that try to establish that, yes, there are categorical limits of that kind. After dismissing some arguments for such limits, we'll encounter one that is more challenging and deserves more attention. We'll try to understand that argument: its message, puzzles, and implications."
