| summary | The hippocampus is the only region of the adult human brain that lifelong generates new neurons. Mouse studies lead the way in finding out what these cells are good for and how adult hippocampal neurogenesis is regulated. The activity-dependent regulation of adult neurogenesis represents a particular type of structural plasticity, presumably enabling the flexible integration of novel information into existing contexts. We hypothesize that adult neurogenesis provides adaptability in the face of a changing world and is a key example of plasticity that makes our brains unique and "personal". |
