summary | This talk gives an introduction into the Theory of Event Coding (TEC), which claims that perception and action are not only based on shared (i.e., sensorimotor) representations but are in some sense one and the same thing. Behavioral and neurocognitive studies will be discussed to show how knowledge about possible action goals and action affordances is acquired in infants, children, and adults, how this knowledge is used to select and control intentional action and to anticipate action outcomes, and how it is neurally represented. It will also be discussed how perceived action effects form the basis of our self-concept and the degree to which we experience ourselves as separated from, or part of another person. |
