| summary | In this presentation, we examine the syntax-prosody interface of apposition in Shingazidja. Through a comparison with English, we first define two types of apposition (restrictive and non-restrictive) and examine their syntactic properties. While restrictive apposition can be straightforwardly analysed as a single constituent, the syntactic data for non-restrictive appositives are ambiguous between a single constituent (‘integration’) analysis and an analysis in which the appositive and its anchor and syntactically separate (‘orphanage’). Prosodic data are then brought to bear on the problem. These data confirm the single constituent analysis for restrictive apposition and provide evidence that non-restrictive appositives are indeed syntactically linked to their antecedent and are prosodically embedded in their host clause. |
