| summary | The rhythmic structure of speech provides temporal and metrical cues that are guiding perception and production processes during first and second language acquisition. The aim of this talk is to give an overview of rhythmic processes and functions during language learning. Our talk will be organized into two parts: the first one will summarize recent research that has focused on the functions of rhythm, such as language identification or the segmentation of linguistic units, during first language acquisition in early childhood; the second part will focus on the influences of rhythmic aspects of the mother tongue (L1) on second language acquisition (L2). Here, the idea is put forward that the rhythmic structure of L1 is the only basis on which a language learner can build the new L2 system. However, learners also exhibit some resistance to acquire new L2 structures. As will be shown with some preliminary data, the reason for this may again reside in the L1 rhythm that is transferred into L2 production. In sum, it is through the rhythm system of L1 that learners first re-interpret L2, and therefore, L2 acquisition needs a work of reappropriation, both at a perceptual and a production level, in order to overcome highly overlearned rhythmic processes in which speakers are immersed since their very first days of life. |
