| summary | Neurodegenerative disorders offer a compelling view of human cognition when distinct neural networks break down in a systematic and coordinated fashion. Loss of episodic memory is a cardinal feature of Alzheimer’s disease attributable to atrophy in medial temporal and posterior parietal brain regions. By contrast, degeneration of the anterior temporal lobes in semantic dementia results in pervasive conceptual knowledge deficits in the context of relatively intact episodic memory. These profiles of loss and sparing provide crucial insights into the neurobiology of constructive endeavours such as remembering the past and imagining the future. In this talk, I will present an overview of my work exploring autobiographical memory and future thinking in Alzheimer’s disease and semantic dementia. In this manner, I will demonstrate the necessary interplay between episodic and semantic processes for a range of constructive endeavours, moving towards an integrative account of human memory. |
