| summary | This review covers a particular aspect of railway safety which is the prevention of suicides and trespassing accidents. The analysis aimed at identifying the past and current trend in the prevention practice as reflected by the scientific literature, by looking both quantitatively and qualitatively at the recommended solutions. The review included more than 150 scientific publications from the last 35 years. According to the results, there has been a constant focus on suicide prevention, and only relatively recent interest in trespassing countermeasures. The content analysis revealed 19 main preventative categories. There are few studies that tested the effectiveness of measures or proposed innovative preventative measures. Actual combinations of measures are barely present. The discussion focuses on the need for a unified approach to prevention measures as well as on the emerging tendencies in railway safety practice. |
