| summary | Looking outside ourselves, we can see different bodies, each including a mind; bodies are separate, thus minds, we imagine, must also be different. Generally, we might be told that we can see our own mind, but we cannot see other minds, because other minds are invisible to us. This expression that “we cannot see other minds” is a metaphor, and to see indeed means to know. In my understanding, knowing mind are equal to knowing the content of mind, especially knowing the essential content of mind. It seems that we are not satisfied with merely knowing the contents of our own mind; we also wonder about the contents of other minds and intend to see their most essential contents. However, these contents may be not only invisible, but also hidden to us. Therefore, in this thesis I will, on the one hand, modify the general understanding of the problem of other minds and, on the other hand, develop the knowledge of mind, in particular to find the way of knowing contents of mind. These two themes can be developed together by making distinctions between essential and hidden contents of other minds. In general, what I am trying to see is the essential content of mind, and what I think difficult to see is the possibly hidden plus essential content of other minds. In the due course, I would like to create a new term “hide-ability” to replace the old obstacle invisibility to knowing other minds. |
