summaryConsiderable evidence has shown bilingual advantages in nonverbal executive control tasks. However, language processing, too, can require executive control and resolution of conflict. For bilinguals, this conflict can come from the other jointly activated language. This talk will review studies showing how the level of language proficiency interacts with the demands for executive control in verbal tasks to determine bilingual performance and differences between monolinguals and bilinguals on these tasks.
