| summary | An essential component of the comprehension of a text (or of multiple texts) is
the construction of a coherent mental representation of the textual information.
To construct such a representation, a reader must identify meaningful relations
between the var
ious elements in the text(s) and between those elements and
prior knowledge. Identification of such relations depends on inferential
processes. The first part of the presentation will describe current models of
inference generation in reading, distinguishi
ng between the process and product
of comprehension. The second part will present results from cross
-
sectional and
longitudinal studies on the development of inferential skills and on differences
between proficient and struggling readers. The results show both systematic
differences and continuities in the development of inference
-
generation abilities.
The presentation will conclude with a brief discussion of the results from
neuropsychological investigations of the process of comprehension during
reading. |
