summaryThe space we perceive is not a uniform space. In particular, peripersonal space contains the objects with which we can immediately interact, whereas extrapersonal space contains the objects that we can reach in the future. Furthermore, peripersonal space specifies our private area in social context. On the basis of the most recent behavioral and brain imaging studies, I will show that motor coding of objects serves the construction of an abstract representation of peripersonal and extrapersonal spaces. I will also show that abstract representation of peripersonal space is a pre-requisite for communicating and interacting in a social context.
