summaryThe UMM (University Medical Centre Mannheim) is a corporation with the medical faculty belonging to the university of Heidelberg. The department of neurology is directed by Prof. Michael Hennerici. Clinical projects include "Neurovascular Ultrasound" being one of the most important scientific topics of the department since the 1980's and playing a leading role in several research projects in the EU. Focuses are contrast medium-specific sonographic methods as well as the assessment of the risk of embolism on the basis of plaques morphology. Another important topic is "MRI research" using different MRI facilities to develop and incorporate new measurement techniques and their use in relation to neurological diseases. Areas of "MRI research" are imaging for acute stroke, MS, movement disorders and epilepsy. The most important tool for preclinical research is the 9.4T small animal scanner BioSpec 94/20 USR (Bruker). Projects including 9.4T MRI measurements are the "APP23 mouse model of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA)" as well as "mesenchymal stem cell treatment of rats post stroke and reperfusion". A new preclinical topic in corporation with the CEA-NeuroSpin will be "high intensity focused ultrasound therapy guided by 9.4T MRI in a glioblastoma mouse model" answering the question if pre-sonification of glioblastomas lead to an improvement of radiation therapy.
