summary | Most mammals grow up in the company of siblings, and indeed often spend more time with them than with their mother or other adult care givers. But still little attention has been given to sibling effects by scientists interested in the origins of individual differences. In our research program, we mainly focus on studies on the European rabbit both in the laboratory and under quasi-natural conditions. We show that sibling interactions, including their short-term consequences on physiology and behaviour, can have considerable long-term consequences on survival and reproduction and have the potential to contribute to the emergence of individual differences in temperament. |
