summary | A recurrent question in language acquisition is the extent to which domain general processes are involved in the extraction of regularities from the input. Here, I will present two cases in which opposite predictions are made regarding this issue. First, I will review recent research on the grouping principles described by the Iambic-Trochaic Law, and how experience might be needed to trigger some aspects of them. Second, I will discuss how linguistic representations constrain the extraction of different regularities from consonants and vowels. Together, these studies serve as test cases of how language-specific predictions can be tested using animal models. |
