| summary | Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) encompasses a group of highly complex neurodevelopmental conditions that affect approximately 1% of the population worldwide. Diagnosing and treating ASD is a challenge. ASD is a disorder with (i) a complex genetic architecture, (ii) a high degree of variability in the time course, profile, and the severity of autistic symptoms expressed by individuals, and (iii) several associated comorbid conditions. The neurobiology of ASD therefore remains poorly understood, and there are currently no available biomarkers that could facilitate clinical decision making. The aim of this talk is to introduce current progress made towards biomarker development in ASD, primarily focusing on in vivo neuroimaging features, and to outline the challenges that have to be overcome first before these potential markers find their way into clinical practice. |
