| summary | In this talk, I will critically examine classical and contemporary definitions of optic ataxia, suggesting in each case that the condition, as strictly defined, might not exist. First, more than a century after Balint's original description, there has arguably been no clear demonstration of a selective visuomotor disruption without perceptual or attentional deficit. Second, an emerging contemporary definition that emphasises the specificity of misreaching to peripheral vision, may apply to a highly restricted sub-set of patients, and focus researchers on misleading questions. Thus, although I will not answer the question in my title, I hope to narrow it down by a constructive consideration of what optic ataxia is not. |
