| summary | In my talk I am going to raise some questions that seem simple but are difficult to answer: What do we mean when we talk about subjects? And what does it take to be one? How do subjects differ from non-subjects? And can one imagine that subjects emerge from things or beings that are not subjects at that time? These are questions which a theory of human subjectivity must answer. In my talk I am going to sketch an outline for such a theory. In the center of this sketch is an idea which at first glance seems rather unusual—if not absurd: Namely, that human subjectivity is not a natural fact but instead a social institution— something manufactured by people for people and for certain purposes. In other words, I will be trying to sell you a rather strange idea... |
