summaryOur laboratory studies the role of transient populations of glutamatergic neurons in the development of the cerebral cortex. Using genetic tracing and cell ablation in the mouse we have characterized several populations ofearly-born neurons which have the common and unique characteristics to distribute over long distance from their generation site and to be transiently present during development. These neurons serve as organizers of cortical neural and vascular development by orchestrating in a non-cell-autonomous manner the radial and tangential growth of the embryonic cerebral cortex, axonal targeting and the formation of functional areas. We will discuss how the presence and disappearance of these neurons is crucial for cortical wiring in normal and pathological conditions.
