summaryIn this talk, I will outline some of the studies that show that children with comprehension difficulties have particular problems with inference making, and will discuss possible reasons why this might be the case. I will then consider the direction of t he link between inference skill and comprehension, and will present evidence that supports a link from inference skill to comprehension. Finally, I will consider the relations between different aspects of vocabulary knowledge and inference skills, with re ference to the Lexical Quality Hypothesis. I will end by considering some of the implications for support for comprehension and remediation of difficulties.
