| summary | Numerous studies have highlighted that the oscillatory synchronicity between electrophysiological signals, such as electromyography (EMG), electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG), is likely to characterize motor control processes. Coherence between pairs of electrophysiological time series can be used to measure synchronicity with widespread potential applications in fundamental and clinical research, but the reliability and the limitations of the coherence analyses are still debated. Firstly, this talk will present a wavelet-based method suitable for accurate assessment and improved quantification of pairwise interactions between electrophysiological signals by coherence in the time-frequency domain. Secondly, the effectiveness and the appropriateness of the proposed method to characterize motor control processes will be illustrated by studies of EEG-EEG, EEG-EMG and EMG-EMG coherence – i.e., respectively, corticocortical, corticomuscular and intermuscular interactions – in healthy participants, trained individuals and patients. |
