| summary | Neuroscience and developmental psychology are often seen as having different aims and objectives from each other. I will outline why amongst all neuroscience techniques, EEG-derived methods are those which are best placed for research with infant participants. Using examples from areas including biological motion processing, action understanding, joint attention and eye gaze, my talk will focus on work that shows why neuroscience techniques can substantially enrich our understanding of early social and perceptual development. A particular focus will be on the role of action production within action perception. I will also look at semantic processing with actions and how this may be related to language. I will finish by showing how new analysis methods allow for improved attrition rates, better representative samples, and the assessment of individual differences. These factors mean that neuroscience methods will be increasingly at the forefront of many new discoveries within developmental science for the next decade. |
