summaryTowards the end of their second year of life, young children acquire new words at an impressive pace. Yet not all children learn words with the same efficiency, and variability in vocabulary sizes is very large. I will describe a few studies attempting to shed light on learning mechanisms employed by young children when learning new words, into factors modulating vocabulary size or composition, and will introduce a new method to evaluate early word knowledge.
