summaryIn the past two decades, more and more dictionary usage studies have been published, but most of them deal with the question what users appreciate about dictionaries, which dictionaries they use and which information they need in specific situations. However, language teachers and lecturers of linguistics often have the impression that students use too few high-quality dictionaries in their every-day work. Against this background, we started an international cooperation project to collect empirical data with the aim to come closer to what students actually do when they correct language problems. Therefore, we created a new multi-methodological setting that allows us to combine quantitative with qualitative analyses. Portuguese, Spanish and Italian learners of German had to deal with erroneous German sentences. All their actions (editing and researching) were recorded with a screen capture software. Additionally, they were instructed to “think aloud”. This was also recorded and transcribed. This data was then integrated to allow for combined analyses of all data sources.
