summary | With the prevalence of lifestyle diseases, medical research is recognizing the importance of behaviour change. And people clearly know how to change their behavior in the short-term. They start diets, begin exercise programs, and launch new programs of meds. But long- term, success is uneven. Despite being motivated and knowledgeable, people don’t always stick with healthy actions.
In this talk, I argue that people are more likely to persist when they form habits. I explain the cognitive and motivational mechanisms behind habit formation, and I outline research methods to form habits in field studies and in lab experiments. Finally, I contrast these principles with popular apps that purport to help people form habits. |
