summaryEven in the most complex of animal societies, such as those of savannah baboons, many aspects of group behaviour are consistent with models of collective behaviour based on simple interaction rules. However, while the rules that underpin apparently complex social structure can be relatively simple, the consequences of social life on evolution can be profound. Drawing on my studies of leadership and collective movement in baboons and birds, I illustrate why we should simplify how we think about the building blocks of animal societies, but that we should not underestimate the potential for social behaviour to fundamentally alter our understanding of evolutionary processes.
